If you have lived in Dallas for any amount of time, you already know that Texas summers are hard on just about everything. Your vehicle is no exception.

Between triple digit temperatures, stop and go traffic, long commutes, and the occasional road trip, your car can take a serious beating during the summer months. Some problems show themselves immediately. Others don’t become obvious until temperatures start to cool down and a component that has been struggling finally gives up.

At Compton Automotive, we see the effects of Dallas heat on vehicles every year. As a AAA Texas Approved Auto Repair facility and NAPA Gold Service Center, one of our biggest priorities is helping our customers catch problems before they become expensive breakdowns.

Here are five areas we recommend paying attention to as we move out of the hottest part of the Texas summer.

1. Your Battery

Heat can be surprisingly hard on a car battery.

Most people associate dead batteries with cold weather, but extreme heat can accelerate the chemical reactions inside a battery and contribute to corrosion and deterioration. By the time winter arrives, a battery that survived a brutal Texas summer may not have much life left in it.

That’s why a battery that seems to be starting the car normally today may still deserve a test.

Watch for:

• Slower than normal engine cranking
• Needing multiple attempts to start
• Corrosion around the battery terminals
• Flickering lights or unusual electrical behavior
• A battery that is several years old

A quick battery test can tell us considerably more than simply looking at the battery and guessing.

2. The Cooling System

Your engine produces an enormous amount of heat under normal operation. Your cooling system is responsible for keeping that heat under control.

Dallas traffic can make the job even harder.

When you’re sitting in traffic on Central Expressway or LBJ with the air conditioning running, your engine and cooling system are working continuously. A cooling system that is already low on coolant, has a weak component, or has a restricted radiator may have trouble keeping up.

Pay attention to your temperature gauge.

If it starts running hotter than usual, don’t ignore it.

Overheating can turn a relatively manageable cooling system repair into major engine damage if the vehicle continues to be driven while overheating.

3. Your Air Conditioning System

Let’s be honest. In Dallas, air conditioning isn’t a luxury.

It’s survival.

A properly functioning A/C system should be able to keep the cabin comfortable even when the temperature outside is extreme. If your air conditioning has gradually become less effective, however, that can indicate an underlying issue rather than simply being something you have to live with.

If you notice that your A/C:

• Takes longer to cool the vehicle
• Isn’t getting as cold as it used to
• Blows warm air intermittently
• Makes unusual noises
• Has different temperatures coming from different vents it’s worth having it checked.

The important thing is figuring out why the system isn’t performing properly instead of simply adding refrigerant and hoping for the best.

4. Your Tires

Hot pavement means hot tires.

Tire pressure also changes with temperature, which is one reason it’s important to check your tire pressures regularly rather than relying exclusively on how the vehicle feels while driving.

We also look at tire condition, tread depth, uneven wear, and signs of damage.

If your vehicle has been pulling to one side, vibrating at highway speeds, or wearing tires unevenly, don’t automatically assume you just need an alignment. There can be several reasons a vehicle develops those symptoms.

That’s where a proper inspection matters.

5. Belts, Hoses and Other Rubber Components

Heat and age are not particularly kind to rubber.

Belts and hoses live in a very hot environment every time you drive your vehicle. Over time, they can become brittle, cracked, swollen, or otherwise compromised.

A failing hose or belt isn’t necessarily going to give you much warning.

That’s why these components are things we look at during routine maintenance and inspections.

Catching a deteriorating component while your vehicle is already in the shop is considerably better than discovering the problem on the side of the road.

What We’re Seeing in the Shop

One thing we tell our customers all the time is that maintenance isn’t about predicting exactly when something is going to fail.

It’s about finding the things that are beginning to deteriorate before they leave you stranded.

A vehicle can drive perfectly today and still have a battery, belt, hose, tire, or cooling system component that is nearing the end of its useful life.

That’s why inspections are so valuable.

Our technicians aren’t just looking for things to sell you. We’re looking at the overall condition of the vehicle so you can make an informed decision about what needs attention now, what can wait, and what you should keep an eye on.
